Just Opened, Friday Feb. 3, 2012

We began our music today with a preview of a CD that includes works by one of our "Composers of Color" series, Joseph Boulougne, Le Chevalier de St. Georges.

(the Black Mozart)
Music of Joseph Boulougne,
le Chevalier de St. Georges
Tafelmusik Orchestra
Jeanne Lamon, cond.
CBC 5225
ISBN#0 59582 52252 3
The fascinating life of Joseph Boulougne, a charmed life (he escaped the guillotine after THREE trials during the revolution), bourne testiment by his effervescent music. This CD also includes music by two musicians (Jean-Marie LeClair and Francois-Joseph Gossec) who taught, supported, and encouraged his work. This week (Feb. 6-10) he is the focus of our "Compser of Color" series... see blog entry below for more info. and a link to a program guide for educators. May I have 2 delights of the week this week? If so, this is my Classical Era delight!

Claudio Abbado, cond.
Mahler Chamber Orchestra
D.G. 79551
ISBN# 0 28947 79551 3
Yuja Wang said she would be happy to play these works at the request of maestro Abbado, especially since he is rarely working with soloists these days. We're happy she did, with this excellent recording of the exhaustive ("everything the piano can do") rhendition of the beloved "Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini," and the shorter, but equally thrilling "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 2 in C Minor."

Joshua Bell, violin
Jeremy Denk, piano
SONY 820262
ISBN#8 8697 82026 2 8
Simply Perfect. Three major works for violin and piano by composers at their height, performed by seasoned musicians. These 3 works provide excellent contrast and range of the romantic/modern cusp in French Impressionist compostions, the flowing lyricism of Camille Saint-Saens, the lush melody of Cesar Frank, and Ravel's fusion of moody tone play and jazzy rhythms. The Ravel can take a little more work to get used to it, you don't forget it and it is endlessly rewarding - it was THE major thematic music in the French film "A Heart in Winter (Un Couer en Hiver)."
My Delight of The Week!

Timothy Brown, cond.
