JUST OPENED, Friday August 12, 2011

Last Friday we focused the entire Just Opened on one set of music.
A FOURTEEN CD set anthology of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

1990 - 2000
Anthology of the
Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra
RCO 11004
14 CD set
ISBN# 5 425008 377742
If you just came out of a coma since 1990 and want to catch up on what's been going on in the classical music scene, or you're starting a classical music collection from scratch, this RCO set is great way to start. As with most contemporary performing orchestras, about half of the works are a-melodic and very challenging (like Bartok's "Bluebeard's Castle" or Takemitsu's "A Flock Descends into the Pentagonal Garden"), but the other half are the reliable symphony fare that has been ensuring ticket sales for close to a century (like Ravel's "Mother Goose Suite" and Beethoven's "Pastoral Symphony"). The RCO musicians and performers are uniformly top notch, and this anthology displays them being put through their paces by the great conductors of our day: Ivan Fisher, Maris Jansons, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Sir John Eliiott Garnder, John Adams (the composer/conductor, not the dead president), Andre Previn, and many others including, of course, Bernard Haitink.

I hope you enjoied this look back at the work of these great artists from this imposing set.
Join me next Friday for more new music, Just Opened!
