Just Opened on Friday, March 19

"Tchaikovsky: Variations on a Rococo Theme; Prokofiev: Sinfonia Concertante" - Gautier Capucon, cello; Mariinsky Orchestra; Valery Gergiev, conductor. Two pieces for cello and orchestra from the Russian tradition, recorded live in St Petersburg on Christmas Eve, 2008. (Virgin Classics 5099969448607 / 694486)

"Bruckner:
Symphony No. 7" - Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks; Mariss Jansons, conductor. From the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra's own BR Klassik label comes another concert recording, this time one of Bruckner's most popular works, the Symphony No. 7 (BR Klassik 4035719001006)

"Rachmaninoff:
Variations on a Theme of Corelli; Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition; Prokofiev: Sonata No. 2, Op. 14" - Garrick Ohlsson, piano. The Bridge Records label has a treasure trove of Garrick Ohlsson's recordings, many of which were recorded for other labels and are being reissued. This one features two new recordings of the Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev pieces, and a 1974 concert performance in Prague of Mussorgsky's "Pictures." (Bridge Records 090404932021 / 9320)

"Silvius Leopold Weiss:
Lute Sonatas, Volume 10" - Robert Barto, baroque lute. From a series of CDs focusing on the music of one of the great lutenists of the baroque era, two long-form sonatas for lute - the Sonatas No. 28 in F Major and No. 40 in C Major, along with Weiss' best-known work: the Tombeau sur la mort de M. Comte de Logy. (Naxos 747313221974 / 8.572219)

Thanks to Bridge Records, EMI Music, and Naxos for this week's new discs, and most especially to my colleague Christopher Ranck for hosting "Just Opened."
